Corporations Are Abstract & Living Organisms

Corporations Are Abstract & Living Organisms

From my experience  working in various corporations and organizations, I’ve realized they embody a fundamental tension between two seemingly contradictory truths: On the one hand, each organization is a cold, abstract entity governed by legal frameworks. On the other hand, every organization is a dynamic, living organism with its own genesis story, growth spurts, slowdowns, and evolving shape and health.

Mastering the art of navigating this contradiction is not just a skill but a necessity. The first step is to accept and embrace it. And then, to behave accordingly—recognizing when the corporation is a lifeless legal entity and when it's an ever-changing life form. When building a team, navigating office politics, or wanting to stand out in the sea of colleagues, view the organization as a living entity. Conversely, when negotiating a promotion, considering the legal implications of executive decisions, or adhering to corporate norms, treat the company as an abstract legal construct. This understanding and acceptance will empower you to navigate the corporate landscape with confidence and control.

I’ve seen too many young talented people struggle with this duality. Often frustrated and stressed, particularly when the organization’s actions conflict with their expectations, they say things like, "But I thought this was family?"

My advice? Embrace the dual nature  of any organization with a clear-eyed perspective. This understanding can help you navigate challenges more productively and with less stress.
